Women and Surrealism, the motif of an exhibition at the Picasso Museum in Málaga

The Picasso Museum brings to Málaga a hitherto unseen collection embracing the art of female surrealists. They have been overlooked by art history, many of them overshadowed by their partners; they rebelled against the social impositions and morals of his time. Almost a century later, the Málaga art gallery commemorates them with an exhibition entitled "We are fully free."

La mujer y el Surrealismo, en el Museo Picasso Málaga

1920s surrealism considered women a work of art, a muse at most. Which is why, back then, these artists went virtually unnoticed in the eyes of critics and the public. However, these women were unconventional and controversial, regarding surrealism as a tool for asserting their personal freedom.

Their works outline to us how they explored the unconscious through dreams, induced trances, thoughts and feelings. History unjustly dismissed them back in the day as being of scant importance. The galleries of the Picasso Museum in Málaga restore them to the prominence that should have enjoyed in the first place,  and sees them re-emerge, fully free, as creators of unique and original worlds... All seen from a female perspective.
