Rota Municipal Council, Cádiz, has approved provisional intervention in the waste collection service operated by the concessionary company FCC. Company staff have been on strike since Monday. The council is set to take over the management of the service if the company and workers fail to reach a deal to end the strike by tomorrow.
The strike started after midnight last Sunday. Negotiations to renew the agreement reached a deadlock after FCC¿s refusal to budge at all in its proposal for wage reviews below the CPI.
Three days into the strike, and with the rubbish starting to overflow from some containers, this morning¿s extraordinary full council session saw the decision taken to take interim control of the concession as a way of managing staff and services not being guaranteed by the company.
FCC reacted immediately by calling workers¿ representatives to a meeting at midday to offer an improvement in conditions.
Rota has about 30,000 inhabitants, a figure which is almost tripled at this time of year due to tourism.
