25th anniversary of Expo 92
We visit the Andalusian Contemporary Art Centre, which is now commemorating the 25th anniversary of Expo 92 with an exhibition on the art and culture of that legendary year.
Going into the former Carthusian Monastery of Santa María de las Cuevas in Seville, the first thing we find is the visitors' book, which starts with the signatures of the Royal family. On 20 April 1992, they opened the exhibition commemorating the 5th centenary of the discovery of America. Maybe that's why the second thing that we see is a statue of Columbus. The sailor who changed everything, and who died thinking that he had merely found another route to Asia. The new continent brought great wealth to the kingdom of Spain. At that time, Seville was the gateway to the Americas. The Andalusian capital was the link to the Latin American colonies. And that is one of the subjects for discussion in this show.
We also saw that colonial expansion reflected in the Expo 92. Who doesn't remember the videos projected in the pavilions? Or the people queueing up to see them? Or taking a break on benches like this one. 112 countries took part in the Expo. Over its 6 months, it had more than 15 million visitors. Many of them will be in these videos by teleexpo, the television channel created just to cover the Expo, where many colleagues from TVE worked.
