UPA's agricultural assessment for 2017, a year marked by drought
Drought is the main concern for the Andalusian countryside, according to the annual agriculture report presented today by UPA Andalusia . Farm gate prices remain with no solution. The positive evolution of exports are those which are compensating for these difficulties.
We have been below the average water level for 4 years and that has an impact on the lower production of the major crops: olive trees, citrus fruits, sweet fruits and horticulture. UPA assures that climate change is obliging the modernisation of irrigation networks and the creation of water infrastructure.
Prices are another factor which UPA claims is not resolved despite the Law of the food chain. Costs increase due to the lack of water, particularly in animal husbandry. UPA states that the sale at loss with loss leader products of large department stores produces a lot of damage however it highlights that the increase in exports alleviate the sector, particularly that of olive oil. With regard to the CAP, UPA calls for quicker aid in the package of the Rural Development Plan. It also highlights the lack of manpower for the strawberry and red fruits campaign. It estimates that there is a shortage of 30,000 workers.
