"Murillo and his Trail", at the Espacio Santa Clara in Seville

The Espacio Santa Clara opens its doors today to "Murillo and his Trail", one of the major exhibitions being held to commemorate the 4th centenary of the birth of the Seville artist. It takes the form of a look at his career and the influence his painting had on subsequent generations, a legacy which lasted until the 19th century. The exhibition includes loans from major international art galleries such as the Louvre, the Prado or the Palazzo Pitti.

The "Virgin of the Swaddling Clothes" is the star attraction, as well as being one of Murillo¿s most reproduced works. Its loan has proven to be the most complicated of all. "In the museum in Budapest another copy is kept of the work that is even mistaken for an original work by Murillo". "The Virgin and Child" is another of the great works on display. As a subject much in demand in Counter Reformation Spain, Murillo painted it over and over again.

62 works, including oil paintings, drawings and sculptures from public and private collections. Works by Murillo himself and of his disciples or followers. He left a lasting impression that endured for more than two centuries, yielding works as diverse as the "Saints Justa and Rufina" by José Gutiérrez de la Vega, or the impressive "The Early Career of Murillo", painted in 1865 by the British artist John Phillip. This is a long and fruitful legacy, which we can now enjoy in this magnificent exhibition.
