Approximately 6 tonnes of cocaine seized in Algeciras
An anti-drug trafficking operation in Algeciras has resulted in the seizure of close to 6 tonnes of cocaine from inside a container in the port. The drugs were hidden in crates of bananas from Colombia. It is the largest stash of cocaine seized in Spain in this century. There are 3 detainees and the operation remains open.
The operation was begun by the Tax Agency, with the subsequent cooperation of the National Navy, the Colombian Public Prosecutor's Office, Spanish security forces and the support of the United Kingdom. The stash was hidden in a container sent from Medellín, on board a 208-meter-long vessel flying a flag of convenience from the Marshall Islands. The official cargo was bananas, but in reality the ship was carrying 5,800 kilograms of cocaine, whose value in the European market is estimated to be 280 million euros. At the moment, three have been arrested.
According to the Interior Minister, Juan Ignacio Zoido, this is the largest stash of cocaine seized in Spain thus far in this century, and one of the largest in Europe. The Colombian Navy believes that the operation was a strong blow to the drug-trafficking networks installed in the Gulf of Urabá, which the country's government has been fighting for years.
