The Alhambra presents the restoration of the Royal Baths

This Friday the restoration of the roofing over the Alhambra Royal Baths was presented in Granada. It has taken two years and cost more than a million Euros to complete the work, which has made it possible to stop the leaks that were affecting this iconic part of the historical site. These are the only Muslim baths in the West dating from medieval times and preserved virtually intact.

Built in the 14th century, at the time of Muhammed V, the Alhambra Royal Baths, on which leaks had been taking their toll, have taken on a renewed splendour following the restoration of their roofing. The work has made it possible to ward off damp and draw attention to the skylight through which light entered the rooms, illuminating them in a variety of shades throughout the day and with the passing seasons, as explained by Pedro Salmerón, architect of the Alhambra.

There is a second phase of restoration in the pipeline, in which other parts will be addressed, such as the walls and in the area of the boiler, which is no longer there, in addition to the Hypocaust. The work, which has taken two years to complete and cost in the region of one million, two hundred thousand Euros, will also enable the creation of a new field of research into these medieval baths, which are unique in the West.
