Concern in the sector for the tariff imposed by the U.S. on Spanish black olives

Andalusia is the top-producing province of table olives in Spain. Hence the sector's concerns about the U.S. government¿s decision to impose a tariff on black olive imports. The fear is that the effects of this decision will eventually spread out to other products. The Regional Government of Andalusia has organised an emergency meeting to analyse the impact that the tariff will have on the sector.

This is a setback for producers of black table olives: the difficult drought problem is being compounded by the commercial one. This is especially true for Seville, where almost 90% of the national total is produced. Donald Trump¿s government is imposing a precautionary tariff on Spanish olives due to unfair competition as outlined by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce.

The tariff fluctuates between 2% and 7%, allegedly because this product is imported below the market value due to subsidies received from the European Agricultural Policy. There have already been reactions from the sector and the administration. They are asking the European Union to participate fully in line with the World Trade Organisation¿s rules to stop the tariff.
