The trial begins in Pamplona of the five accused of the rape of a young woman at the Sanfermines in 2016
Today the trial began in Pamplona (Navarra) of the five accused of the gang rape of a young woman during last year¿s Sanfermines. The trial is being held behind closed doors to protect the victim¿s privacy. The defendants, who are facing potential sentences of 22 years in prison, have pleaded innocent.
The five defendants have spent more than a year on remand. The victim, a young woman from Madrid, who was 18 years old at the time, will give a statement this Tuesday from a different room via a video link. The trial is expected to last two weeks.
During the course of the week, the local and regional police, who came to the victim¿s aid and arrested her alleged attackers, will give their statements. The defendants will give their statements during the second week of the trial. Their lawyers will attempt to prove that there was no sexual assault, but rather that the young woman gave consent and participated of her own free will in the sexual encounter. Their evidence consists of a video lasting 97 seconds. It was recorded by one of the defendants on his mobile phone. The public prosecutor and the accuser maintain that there is clear proof of rape, while the defence also considers it to be proof, but that what actually took place was an orgy in which each party took part of their own free will.
