Major operation against archaeological plundering in Jaén
The Civil Guard of Jaén has arrested six people involved in the plundering of archaeological artefacts. 748 highly-valuable pieces from the Iberian, Roman and Greek eras have been recovered. The operation is ongoing.
The Civil Guard¿s Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) of Jaén has recovered 748 pieces that are still being studied on account of their priceless archaeological value. Among the pieces is a Roman plaque with Latin inscriptions, which may signal the origin of writing in the peninsula. It is one of 30 that exist throughout the world and is especially well preserved.
The operation Alfa-Ibero is ongoing. After 6 months of intense investigation, 6 people have been detained at present - residents of Jaén, Andújar, La Guardia and Mancha Real, reports Luis Ortega, Lieutenant Colonel of the Civil Guard of Jaén. The detainees had extensive knowledge of these pieces and their value. They have been accused of crimes against national heritage and belonging to a criminal gang.
