Granada Metro system is already up and running
The last test journey was carried out on the Granada Metro system this afternoon, and it was officially opened for service at twelve o'clock this afternoon. A total of 558 million euros was invested in the system, which has 23 overground stops and three underground stations. Andalusia becomes the only community of Spain to have 3 Metro systems. As from today, Granada joins Seville and Malaga in offering this service.
Ten years after the original works were started and almost 20 years after the first draft, the Granada Metro system has been officially opened to the public. The Board of Andalusia expects to transport 11 million passengers during the first year of operation, a figure that will grow to thirteen and a half million in its third year.
The Metro system crosses the city of Granada from north to south via Maracena, Albolote, central Granada and Armilla. Two customer service offices and around twenty guides working at various points along the grid will help users during the first days of operation. Most of the 16-kilometre route -with 26 stops- is overground, with around three kilometres of the grid being underground, in the central area. Single tickets cost 1.35 euros.
