Verónica, Paco Plaza's new horror flick, playing in Seville

JUAN GIRÁLDEZ

'90s Madrid. Strange phenomena occur in Vallecas, which the police have come to describe as paranormal.

Paco Plaza, the director of the REC saga, was inspired by these events to direct the film Verónica, a horror flick that feels like the most personal out of all that he has done. . . it takes place in the early 1990s, when these phenomena occurred, but the date was also carefully chosen, because it was a time when Spain was opening up to Europe, thanks in part to the Expo and the Olympics.

The character of Verónica, the young Sandra Escacena, is 15 years old and is forced to assume responsibilities that don¿t suit her age, as her mother works too many hours

And as she searches for new things, she is introduced to the paranormal, to ouija . . . One night she invokes the spirit of her deceased father and it seems that something from the afterlife is getting closer.

Another peculiarity of the film is that it¿s a motion picture featuring mostly women, with hardly any men at all.

Ana Torrent plays Verónica¿s mother. It¿s a tribute to Saura and the film Cría Cuervos

What's real is in the eyes of the protagonists. The lines are blurred between the real and the imaginary - which is a recurring theme in the portraits Saura draws of children in his movies. A feature film with lots of turns, suspense, terror . . . It will make you question what you think you know. Now playing in cinemas
