THIRD EXPEDITION TO WRECK OF NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LAS MERCEDES FRIGATE
Under this campaign, the remains and the state of conservation of the frigate sunk in 1804 continue to be analysed. For the first time, the CSIC's best equipped oceanographic research ship is being used: the Sarmiento de Gamboa.
This week the third underwater archeology campaign has kicked off, with the aim of investigating the remains of the Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes frigate. We are reminded why it was vandalised by the treasure hunter company Odyssey. Spain recovered the remains, obtained following a court battle in the US. Now, collaboration between the administrations is enabling us to find out more about the rich submarine heritage in the Gulf of Cadiz.
Under this campaign, the remains and the state of conservation of the frigate sunk in 1804 continue to be analysed. For the first time, the CSIC's best equipped oceanographic research ship is being used: the Sarmiento de Gamboa, meaning that it will be easier to map out the wreck.
The Spanish Institute of Oceanography will once again use the undersea robot Liropus to dive more than 1000 metres to find Mercedes.
As in previous campaigns, they will extract certain objects selected due to their risk of disappearance, thus allowing life on board to be documented or any doubts about the Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes frigate that lie on the bottom of the ocean to be cleared up.
