18th-century Cadiz, an exhibition by Unicaja

The Unicaja Foundation has opened an exhibition in Cádiz  about the city itself during the 18th century ; one of the greatest eras of splendour of the capital city of the Cadiz province. The collection recreates 18 scenes from everyday life 300 years ago in Cadiz, when trade with the Americas made the city into a first-class economic hub.

We invite you to travel back in time. Three centuries ago, Cadiz¿s greatest era of splendour. When the Casa de Contratación (House of Trade) was moved from Seville to the capital city of the Cadiz province for trading with the Americas, the city often referred to as ¿La Tacita de Plata¿ became the main commercial hub of the world. And this had an influence on all aspects of life in the city.

Wander through its streets and discover the four-story houses used for warehouses, offices, housing and service staff, and its viewpoint towers from which boats coming in to port bustling with activity were monitored. Go to the talking shops in some of the many cafes in the city. Go to the theatre or opera house or sneak into a bourgeois reception and dance the gavotte or the rigodón with one of the representatives from the many foreign colonies established here at that time.

The exhibition, which combines costumes, objects and original documents with models, reproductions, photographs and videos, can be visited at the Unicaja Foundation of Cadiz until 8 September.
