The Izaña Atmospheric Observatory joins the ¿Centenarian Club¿

The recognition comes from the World Meteorological Organisation, which places Izaña among the 60 stations in the world that have provided services for a century. Located more than 3,000 meters from Tenerife, it opened operations in 1916. Since then it has not stopped collecting data on temperature, rainfall, atmospheric conditions and humidity. And based on the records that have been kept, according to its director Emilio Caves, there are no doubts about climate change.

Premio Izaña

The data collected over the last 100 years by the Izaña Atmospheric Observatory, which is now being recognised by the World Meteorological Organisation, is being taken into consideration internationally to detect and study climate change. Its location in the high-lying mountains allows meteorologists to study the atmosphere without any local or regional disturbances, and according to the director of the Izaña Atmospheric Observatory, Emilio Caves, the atmosphere is changing. In this region, in the Canaries, the yearly averages show global warming of more than one degree Celsius and increasingly frequent and intense adverse phenomena: strong winds, long periods of drought, heavy rainfall, dust intrusions from the Sahara Desert and heat waves. The Izaña Atmospheric Observatory will continue to collect data
