The Madrid-Seville AVE line has turned 25 years old

The AVE doesn¿t surprise anyone now, but on 21 April 1992 a historical milestone was reached: the High Speed line between Madrid and Seville had been born. A new way of travelling had arisen: at 300 kilometres an hour, but without detecting any movement.

Since then, the AVE has transported 267 million passengers. That first day, the train stopped in Ciudad Real Puerto Llano and in Cordoba. In the latter, amongst applause, onlookers received the train that was going to be the indisputable means of travel to Madrid; already the president of the Board at the time, Manuel Chaves, said it was going to be essential for connecting to the South.

The first AVE tickets cost 6,000 pesetas for the trip, and now they go out for about €76. 471 kilometres are joined now in less than three hours, compared to the 6 hours of before.

The AVE currently travels to Cordoba and Malaga, and to another 45 Spanish cities, although many more are asking for service, such as Grenada, Huelva and Almeria. . . The transformation that Seville underwent in '92 continues to be valued today. The AVE celebrates 25 years of being the second largest rail network in the world, after the Chinese. This pending the competition it will have after the year 2020.
