Drawing a correlation between rurality and poverty "does not benefit" Extremadura, according to sociologist Sánchez-Oro
The Sociology professor from the University of Extremadura, Marcelo Sánchez-Oro, claims that associating poverty and rurality together does not benefit the autonomous community and that relation established between the two terms by the Commission of the Assembly of Extremadura is not valid. The Commission is currently studying a new Regional Statistics Plan, through which the dean of the Faculty of Economics has also called for annual studies on the macroeconomic data of the region, among others.

The Sociology professor, Marcelo Sánchez-Oro believes that the current statistics by the Commission of the Assembly of Extremadura do not reflect the reality of Extremadura. The professor has criticised the future Plan of Statistics analysed by the Commission, which draws a correlation between rurality and poverty, while ignoring factors such as the level of healthcare, education or the retail price index, and adds that aspects such as reliance and happiness should also be taken into account.
In this context, the dean of the Faculty of Economics Julián Ramajo has called for the new law to include an annual study on the macroeconomic forecasts for the region.
