The University of Seville opens the doors of its new Library
The new central library of the University de Seville has begun operating. With almost 6000 m2 built, it lodges more than 130,000 volumes, among them a priceless historical archive. The opening was presided over by the rector, Miguel Ángel Castro, the Minister for Economy and former rector, Antonio Ramírez de Arellano, and the mayor of Seville, Juan Espadas.

After two years of delay and six million euros of investment, the Central Library "Rector Antonio Machado y Nuñez¿ has begun operating today. It is a modern, three-story building with a study room featuring nearly 400 seats, a modern digitalisation workshop and another for restoration of the priceless historical archive. More than 1,200 manuscripts, nearly 8,400 books from the 16th century and 332 incunabula. Among those archived are several treasures, including one of the last 21 Gutenberg Bibles still preserved in the world, Books of hours and a copy of the The Dream of Poliphilus. All are safe-guarded in a special room with the most up-to-date security and fire protection systems.
