Sami Naïr in Extremadura: "Europe needs more social policies"
Sami Naír, professor, politician, philosopher and creator of the concept known as "codevelopment", warns about the proliferation of "extreme right" populisms and calls for Europe to redefine its current migratory policy and to strengthen the European political project in times of a powerful Asian capitalist market. Remarks made during the First Permanent Seminar on Development in Extremadura.
Naïr stated that if Europe wants to overcome the current crossroad caused by the wave of xenophobia that is backed by "extreme right" populism and the state of structural unemployment that it has left behind for 22 million Europeans, action needs to be taken on the short-, medium- and long-term.
This means going back to the European humanitarian visa that enables free movement within the old continent, moving towards progressive economic policies that recover social welfare and redefining the role that Europe wants to play in an era of powerful Asian capitalism. In this context, he stressed that "the European political project needs to be reinforced. And not only by necessarily defending the euro, our life project".
He also warned that: "Globalisation reinforces national identities. An example of this is Trump's victory in the US. And in the end, the weakest lost".
