The Almaraz Nuclear Power Plant will request to extend its operations beyond 2020

The decision of the Nuclear Security Council to endorse the Garoña Power Plant, in Burgos, to continue until it reaches 60 years in operations, opens the path for other plants, like the one from Extremadura, to keep working beyond the 40 years for which they were designed. Sources from Almaraz have confirmed to Spanish Television today that they are preparing the documentation to prolong its service lifetime for a further ten years, beyond 2020, the year in which its authorisation expires.

Before summer, Almaraz will have already the documentation to prolong its sevice lifetime ten more years, according to what its owners have told to Spanish Television. A decision that Podemos Extremadura and Ecologist in Action reject because it affects, so they say, to citizens security.

The Nuclear Security Council gave its approval for the nuclear power plant in Burgos, the oldest of the Spanish nuclear plants, to continue operating for a total of 60 years, 20 more years than were anticipated by Spanish law. The board's decision was not unanimous, four members voted in favour, three from PP and one from PSOE, while one voted against, the socialist ex-minister Cristina Narbona.

The definitive decision is now in the hands of the Ministry of Industry and Energy, although the authorisation is conditioned upon the owners of Garoña making a series of investments.
