La Princesa Paca

At the age of 24, Paca could not have imagined that her life would change radically. One morning in 1898, Rubén Darío, at the peak of his career as a poet, diplomat and journalist, was walking with Valle-Inclán through the royal gardens of the Casa de Campo in Madrid, where Paca was working helping her father, a royal gardener. The modernist poet fell in love with the young woman. It mattered little that Paca was illiterate, her peasant origins or that her parents were opposed to the relationship.
