40 years ago, black students took to the streets of Soweto to protest against the language that was being imposed by white people in schools. The riot lasted a year and, during this time, more than half a thousand children and adolescents lost their lives to the gunshots of white policemen. Among the victims was Héctor Pieterson, a 13 year-old boy whose death turned into a symbol of the fight for freedom.
The ARTIVISMO collection is on exhibition at Casa África, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, offering a run through of the posters that characterised and music that gave a voice to the social resistance of the black population in South Africa in the 70s and 80s.
