Next August 15 marks the 100th anniversary of the Panama Canal, considered to be one of the 20th century's marvels of engineering and through which goes five percent of the maritime world trade. Panama took control of the 80-km-long canal and the 1,426-square-km enclave that surrounds it at midnight on December 31, 1999 according to the 1977 handover treaty signed by then-presidents of the US, Jimmy Carter and Panama, Omar Torrijos. 15.08.2014PA5001.- CIUDAD DE PANAMÁ (PANAMÁ), 08/08/2014.- Vista general de los trabajos de ampliación del Canal de Panamá hoy, viernes 8 de agosto de 2014, en el sector Pacífico de la vía interoceánica. La construcción del tercer juego de esclusas estará terminada para finales de 2015, debido a que ya se encuentra realizado el 73 % de la obra y el avance es del 1,5 % mensual, informó hoy el ingeniero Gustavo Rivas, gerente de la esclusa del Pacífico de la Autoridad del Canal de Panamá (ACP).
