The Museo Ibero de Jaén has been inaugurated
This afternoon, King Felipe VI inaugurated this what will be a new cultural emblem in Jaén: the Museo Ibero. After almost 20 years of controversial delays and high costs, the museum, in which 26 million euros have been invested, aspires to become a reference centre for research and the dissemination of Iberian culture, besides helping to boost cultural tourism in the city.
The museum has cost almost 26 million euros and its construction spanned over two decades filled with obstacles. The building, with a surface area of 11,000 square metres, will give an overview of the Iberian culture, which occupied much of the peninsula between the 7th and the 1st century BC.
The temporary exhibition with which the centre opens its doors is entitled ¿La dama, el príncipe, el héroe y la diosa¿. It features more than 300 pieces, a fraction of what will be on show in the permanent collection according to Arturo Ruiz, one of the commissioners of the collection. Following the opening today - with the presence of the King and the president of the Regional Government of Andalusia - the museum opened to the public on Tuesday morning, with normal museum opening hours managed by the Department of Culture.
