World Acquired Brain Damage Day
This Thursday is Acquired Brain Damage Day. It is the third cause of death in Spain, where more than 400 thousand people are affected by the condition. The right to live in dignity is a collective plea among those with brain damage, and for that to happen, resources are needed. In order to shed light on this condition, we are going to share José¿s story, who has been suffering from serious sequelae ever since he was involved in a lorry accident 25 years ago.
The damage he has been suffering from ever since affects his mobility and the way he speaks. He was also left blind. However, his determination was not only unscathed, but actually strengthened. He studied psychology, and after receiving his doctorate, he passed the competition to work for the Regional Government of Andalusia. Every day he commutes from Mairena del Aljarafe to the centre of Seville for work guided solely by his dog. His most important milestone, he says, is to start a family.
But his story doesn¿t end there: today he fights for the dignity of people with acquired brain damage, all the while battling, he assures, another equally important damage: social invisibility and institutional neglect. This Friday he will be embarking upon his very own Bicycle Tour for Andalucía Solidaria. He intends to cycle 1,100 kilometres in 5 days. A story that, like few others, defines the greatness of humanity.
