Jesús el Rico from Malaga will not release a prisoner this year on Holy Wednesday, as has been tradition
The 150-year-old tradition is broken in Malaga. Jesús El Rico will not release a prisoner this year on Holy Wednesday. They will however release someone in May, once pardon has been granted by the Council of Ministers.
One of the oldest traditions in Malaga on Holy Wednesday will be broken this year. After 150 years, this year the Brotherhood of Jesús El Rico will not release a prisoner. They will release someone next month, once the government has granted pardon. This is because the council of ministers rejected the provisional list of prisoners during their last meeting.
It is not the first time that the ministry of justice has rejected the prisoners suggested for pardon but, on previous occasions, Prison Institutions, the Attorney's Office of Malaga or the Provincial Court had time to suggest other candidates. This time it has not been the case, but the government has given the Brotherhood the option of suggesting new names that they will consider.
The Fraternity of Jesús el Rico consider this a good option and are already look for other candidates. If authorisation is granted, they will be able to release a prisoner during a procession held in Malaga in May.
