Failure of OSPAR agreement for protecting the Arctic
Iceland, Norway and Denmark have blocked the agreement for creating the first marine reserve in international waters of the Arctic.
Ospar Ártico
Widely supported but not enough to create a marine reserve in the Arctic. This is the conclusion that was reached during the OSPAR Agreement meeting held this year in Tenerife. Iceland, Denmark and Norway have blocked the decision and forwarded the discussion to the Arctic Council where the United States, Russia and Canada will also have their say.
The proposal intended to create the first marine reserve in international waters in the North Pole, measuring around half the size of the peninsula. According to Greenpeace the reserve would protect the threatened area which could rise as a result of sea ice melting due to the climatic change.
