The Spanish government recently approved a new anti-smoking bill. Although it still needs to be voted on by Parliament, the proposal has sparked debate, particularly regarding the new smoke-free areas it introduces, which include bar and restaurant terraces. Dr José María Martín-Moreno, a Professor of Preventive Medicine and Public Health at the University of Valencia, stresses that "tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of illness and death". He believes that extending smoke-free outdoor areas "is not an attack on smokers, but a measure to protect everyone's right to breathe clean air".
