For the first time since 1936 the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to a journalist, or rather, to two journalists: Maria Ressa, who is from the Philippines, and Dmitry Andreyevich Muratov, who is Russian. The 2021 prize was awarded jointly to the two journalists "for their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace." After our newscast, we listen to Maria Ressa's acceptance speech, delivered this past Friday in Oslo, Norway. In her speech she emphasizes the fundamental importance for democracy of freedom of expression and press freedom, freedoms which she notes are not, however, "carte blanche" for saying or publishing anything at all.
