Malala adquirió relevancia hace tres años, cuando se conoció su identidad después de explicar en un blog, durante meses, las atrocidades cometidas por los talibanes paquistaníes, que prohibieron la educación de las niñas en zonas bajo su control. Aquella osadía y la de su familia, que la animó a seguir asistiendo a la escuela, le valió duras amenazas de los talibanes, quienes el martes reivindicaron el ataque y dijeron en un comunicado que matar a Malala era una "obligación bajo la 'sharía' (ley islámica)".
