Upheaval in El Puerto de Santa María following the death of local businesswoman Esperanza Jiménez in a favela in Rio de Janeiro

Today is a day of mourning for El Puerto de Santa María, following the tragic death of Esperanza Jiménez. A well-known businesswoman from the town located in Cádiz died in Brazil on Monday from a police shooting whilst on a tour of a favela in Rio de Janeiro. At the time of death, Esperanza was in a vehicle with her brother, her sister-in-law and an Italian tourist.

Upheaval and dismay in El Puerto de Santa María, where Esperanza Jiménez and her family are very well known. Neighbours and acquaintances remembered Esperanza and showed their disbelief at the way her death had taken place by the estate agent's she opened with her brother on the central Calle Luna two decades ago.

The town hall of El Puerto de Santa María, where one of her brothers worked as an architect up until a few months ago, wanted to express the town¿s sadness with a minute's silence and one day of having the flags flown at half-mast. The town hall has reached out to the family of the deceased and offered to assist them in whatever they may need.
