35 million of losses in Sevillian fields with old French potato
We are at the end of the potato collection season in Andalusia and the farmers are pointing the blame at the distribution sector and its speculative strategy for the dip in figures, both in terms of crops per hectare and average consumption per inhabitant.
Andalusia is the first region to harvest the new potato of the season in Europe. One of the basic foods of our diet, which is producing worse crops every year.
Marco Antonio, a farmer, regrets that his potatoes cannot be bought in Andalusia, and that Belgian or German can. His 15 million kilos of crops go to the same large European food chains.
The sector has reported on a permanent speculative strategy that harms farmers and consumers. Here, the distributors deal with potato stocks, they refrigerate them to lower prices at the expense of its quality and even generate misleading publicity.
Demand for this new potato on the European market has increased by 20% now that it is in season. An average European eats around 40 kilos per year, whereas in Spain this figure has gone down to 25 kilos.
