The president of the Canary Islands,Fernando Clavijo, has asked the European Commission for the archipelago to remain exempt from a hypothetical suspension of European funds to Spain, due to non-compliance with the deficit and has maintained that it would be doubly unfair for the islands' programmes to be affected.
