In the summer of 1963, two Swedish students drove down to Spain where in the bathroom of his apartment, they recorded Chicho Sánchez Ferlosio singing the protest songs he'd composed against the Franco dictatorship. The story of that trip and the album resulting from it, "Songs of the Spanish Resistance," are the subject of a recent documentary by filmmaker David Trueba entitled "Si me borrara el viento lo que yo canto" - If the wind were to erase what I sing. Today's program includes the music of that album as it seeks to provide the historical contexts out of which the songs arose: the miners' strikes of 1962 and 63, the efforts by the dictatorship to attract tourism while maintaining its grip on the hearts and minds of Spaniards and the execution of Julian Grimau in April 1963.
