Ciaran Tourish - fiddle, whistles

Dáithí Sproule - guitarra

Mark Kelly - guitarra

The traditional Irish band Altan is undoubtedly one of the music treasures of its home country and takes its name from the deep and mysterious lake in County Donegal, Ireland. The area also has a rich fiddling tradition and repertoire.

In the course of their 30 years of playing together, the musicians of Altan have created a distinctive style characterized by contagious energy and Irish rhythms, which – along with the fragile beauty of the traditional songs played by fiddles, whistles, guitars, accordion and bouzouki and sung in Irish Gaelic as well as English – have fascinated audiences all over the world. In 2006, the Irish Government honoured the band by putting their image on an official postage stamp.

They have performed and recorded with stars like Dolly Parton, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Ricky Skaggs, and played in the world’s most prestigious venues, such as the Royal Albert Hall, the Sydney Opera House and the Grand Ole Opry. Their album The Widening Gyre, whose title refers to a poem by W. B. Yeats, was produced in Nashville in 2014 and reflects the group's widening of their musical horizons over the past three decades.

Altan’s founding member, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, who is the band’s lead singer and fiddler, was named the 2017 Traditional Musician of the Year, the highest award for an artist in the genre. The band's appearances this year have included shows at Dublin Castle as part of the Temple Bar Trad Fest and at Celtic Connections in Glasgow, as well as an extensive US tour.
