The polemical tax of successions, debated over Facebook on a video by Fernández Vara

The president of the Board of Extremadura has encouraged a debate on the tax of successions in the region -the third highest tax on inheritances in Spain- by posting a video on his Facebook profile that has already got more than 13.000 comments and 56.500 plays. We asked Extremadurans on the street for their opinions, and saw that the majority would prefer for it to be abolished.

"¿Do you think that it should be standarised from a fiscal point of view and that the same should be paid for goods in all territories? Y,¿are you aware of a situation involving a tax that you think has an excessive payment?", are samples of the questions posed by the president of Extremadura in his video on Facebook in which he asked for the opinions of people from Extremadura on this tax.

In Extremadura, the tax of successions is free from payment when inheritance passes from parents to children, and as long as this does not exceed 175.000 euros. According to the Finance Department, this accounts for 90 per cent of the cases in the region. These advantages are applied during the first six months after the death of the family member or benefactor, which in the rest of cases must be paid. The problem however lies in the fact that the tax is not paid equally in all the autonomous communities. Between 2011 and 2014, 3.000 people from Extremadura emigrated, at least fiscally and the majority to Madrid, in order to pay less.
