Un guitarrista y un bajista blancos Steve Cropper y Lewis Steinberg, fundaron en 1962 el grupo instrumental más importante de la historia del soul con un teclista negro llamado Booker T. Jones, que también dominaba el saxo y el clarinete, y un excelente percusionista negro llamado Al Jackson Jr., que había tocado en la orquesta de Willie Mitchell. Todos eran de Memphis y enseguida encontraron un nombre para su banda, Booker T. & The MG’s, abreviatura de Booker T. y el Memphis Group.
El 1 de octubre de 1975, hace cincuenta años, Al Jackson Jr. fue asesinado a tiros en su domicilio de Memphis. Tenía 39 años.
