In today's broadcast, after the news, our Mideast correspondent Elsa Yazbek reports on the parliamentary elections held in Lebanon this past Sunday. Then we hear, in its entirety, Manuel de Falla's song-cycle "Siete canciones populares españolas" (seven Spanish popular songs), as performed by Spanish mezzo-soprano Teresa Berganza, accompanied on the piano by her then-husband Félix Lavilla. The songs making up this entrancing song-cycle are: "El paño moruno," "Seguidilla murciana," "Asturiana," "Jota," "Nana," "Canción," and "Polo." Teresa Berganza died last week at the age of 89.
