English Language Broadcast Flamenco Guitarist Paco de Lucía28/02/2014
TP

We remember Paco de Lucía, Spain's world-renowned flamenco guitarist who died earlier this week while on holiday in Mexico, and whose body arrived today in the Spanish capital where thousands of people paid him their final respects and a memorial ceremony was held. His body was then taken to his native southern town of Algeciras for a wake and burial on Saturday. One of the world's greatest guitarists, Paco de Lucia--who was born Francisco Sánchez Gómez in 1947--is credited with modernizing flamenco by introducing influences from other musical forms such as jazz, bossa nova, classical and salsa. In 1991 he recorded a version of Joaquín Rodrigo¿s Concierto de Aranjuez (Aranjuez Concerto). It was the first time a flamenco musician had committed a major classical work to disc, and we hear that recording in its entirety (28/02/14).
