New York City ordered more than 300,000 people who live in flood-prone areas to evacuate as Hurricane Irene is forecast to reach the city. Irene blasted ashore near Cape Lookout, North Carolina Saturday, a weakened but still massive category one storm that has sent tens of thousands of Americans fleeing for safety. Irene packed sustained winds of 85 miles (140 kilometers) an hour as it made landfall, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said. After North Carolina, the hurricane was forecast to churn up the eastern seaboard towards Washington, New York and Boston. AFP PHOTO / TIMOTHY A. CLARYAFP PHOTO / TIMOTHY A. CLARY -
