  • Fotografía de archivo del exdicator argentino tomada el 29 de marzo de 1978.

File picture of Argentine General Jorge Rafael Videla leader of the military dictatorship that ruled Argentina (1976-1983) taken 29 March 1978. Videla will be tried as from July 2, 2010 in Cordoba, Argentina, for the shooting of 32 political prisoners in 1976. This is the first time that Videla goes on trail since 1985 when he was given a life sentence --which only lasted five years, since in 1990 the then President Carlos Menem (1989-1999) granted pardon to both junta members Videla and Admiral Eduardo Massera. Former Argentine dictator and general, Rafael Videla, is seen during his trial to investigate the crimes committed during Operation Condor, a campaign established by Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Brazil, Bolivia and Uruguay's dictatorships to quash the opposition during the 1970s, in Buenos Aires on March 5, 2013. Argentina's junta, which Videla led from 1976-81, is held responsible for the disappearance of up to 30,000 people during the so-called "Dirty War" against political opponents. Videla, Bignone and Menendez are among the 26 defendants. Jorge Rafael Videla passed away in Argentina on May 17, 2013 at the age of 87. AFP PHOTO / Juan Mabromata

  • Videla junto a otro conocido dictador, el chileno Augusto Pinochet

Photograph taken in Chile in 1978 of Chilean dictator (1973-90) general Augusto Pinochet (L) and his Argentine counterpart general Jorge Videla. The arrogance of both dictators almost triggered a war between Chile and Argentina, that was stopped by the diplomatic skills of cardinal Antonio Samore, pope John Paul II's peace envoy. The Argentine government submitted on November 2000 an extradition request for Pinochet in connection with the 30 September, 1974's car-bomb assassination of Chilean general Carlos Prats and his wife Sofia Cuthbert in the Palermo neighborhood in Buenos Aires. The assassination is considered the beginning of the "Operation Condor," a coordinated repressive operation conducted in the 1970s and 1980s by the dictators of the Southern Cone against their opponents.
