There are many ways a foreign country may enter our imaginations. Spain entered the imagination of my guest Laura Kumin through dance, and she has dedicated her life and career in multiple ways to this art. She started as a dancer and teacher and made Spain her home. Twenty-nine years ago in Madrid Laura co-found the "Certámen coreográfico", which each year gives emerging choreographers the opportunity to share and measure their work under the scrutiny of an international jury. In addition to writing on dance, Laura Kumin also collaborates on European and international arts projects through her "Paso a dos plataforma coreográfico," a cultural association based in Madrid. In this first part of our extended conversation, Laura talks about her first years in Spain in the late 1970's.
