Huge complications with the taxi strike, in Andalusia too

Carmen Ávalos

The reduced presence of taxis in cities was quite obvious at the railway stops in María Zambrano, Malaga. All this bearing in mind that, throughout the Costa del Sol, taxis are operating at a 50% service level, compared to the 25% level in the rest of Andalusia; and that Malaga airport is not included in the strike.

All taxis not involved in these minimum services are supporting the 24-hour strike. The reason is simple. Taxi drivers can't see a very bright future for themselves, with the emergence of companies offering rented vehicles without drivers, and especially after the recent ruling from the Supreme Court. According to the taxi drivers, these companies are offering them unfair competition. Meanwhile, the VTC drivers defend their actions and assert that they are complying with the law. In Andalusia, there are 8,700 taxi licenses, and a thousand VTC licenses. The recent ruling from the Supreme aims for this figure to reach three thousand.
