"I'm still me", the slogan of the National Alzheimer's Congress, held in Málaga

Carmen Ávalos

¿I¿m still me¿, a motto and a phrase to describe one of the goals of this conference. Ending the social stigma of an incurable disease, Alzheimer¿s disease, which is increasingly being detected in younger people

There are no official censuses, but it is estimated that one million two hundred thousand people are affected in Spain. Although 70% of people who have it are unaware or do not notice it. Early diagnosis is fundamental.

But if there is one thing that makes this disease different from others, it is the huge impact it has on family and social life. €40,000 per year is allocated for families, who in addition are almost always the caretakers and have to reduce their working hours or simply leave the jobs.

There are not enough public resources, more so since the crisis began, according to family associations, who believe that sooner or later Alzheimer's will inevitably be on the political agenda. They forget. The rest of us shouldn¿t.
