The olive harvest begins in Seville

Table olives open the most important agricultural campaign for Andalusia. Olives are Andalusia¿s main crop, making this autonomous community the main producing region in the world. This year the forecasts are not very good, as we're told at the foot of an olive tree in Arahal, Sevilla. The tree is defending itself in order to survive the high temperatures, due to the lack of water it refuses to bear fruit. Harvesting has just begun, and the yield is expected to be less than it was for the last 5 years.

The harvesting or picking of table olives for curing is a crop tradition across the Sevillian countryside. The Manzanilla and Gordal varieties are exported all over the world. The United States is a preferred customer, but there¿s bad news from there as well. They¿re accusing the Spanish sector of financial dumping due to aid that Spain receives from the European Agricultural Policy.
