Red alert for heat wave in Córdoba and Jaén
It is the first time this year that the red alert has been activated due to the heat. It affects the provinces of Cordoba and Jaén. The country¿s highest temperature is expected in Andújar with 46 degrees... and minimum temperatures will not be lower than 27.
An African air mass is to blame for the summer¿s first orange heat alert. At temperatures as extreme these, a prevention plan has been activated to prevent the effects of the heat on the most vulnerable population: more than 5 thousand people, among which are elderly people, chronic patients, children and people who are exposed to the sun during their work. In Córdoba, it is the first day of the heat wave of that could end on Saturday, however temperatures ¿especially minimum temperatures¿ will fall little.
AEMET has activated the red alert; which corresponds to the highest risk, and the Department of Health has activated the orange alert, which includes a follow-up of the 12,000 more vulnerable of patients. These include the elderly who have lost the mechanism that makes them feel thirsty and they must keep well-hydrated as a preventive measure. The heat can be felt particularly in the kitchens of bars and restaurants, which cannot have air conditioning. Another effect due to the heat that bikers and drivers are suffering from is when they start up their vehicle that has been directly exposed to the sun.
