Huelva: World Capital of Red Berries

A thousand professionals at the International Red Berry Congress that ends today in Huelva. 97% of domestic production comes from Huelva, with the UK, Germany and France as the main markets.

This year red berry exports have set a new record of 770 million euros. The future lies in opening new markets in Asia and Eastern Europe.

Recent years have seen an explosion of demand for these products due to their antioxidant properties.

Strawberry farmers opted to diversify their crops three years ago. Strawberries have gone from 10,000 hectares to half the area; today this space is occupied by cranberries, raspberries and blackberries.

This figure confirms that Andalusia is still the leader in red berry production and exports: Huelva is the top-producing province in Spain, with 97% of domestic production, accounting for almost 30% in Europe.
