Cordoba pays tribute to Manolete with two exhibitions

Cordoba continues to play tribute to the legendary figure of Manolete on the one-hundredth anniversary of his birth. The municipal bullfighting museum exhibits a large painting of him by Zuloaga. In the central Bulevar del Gran Capitán there is a curious exhibition focusing on the bullfighter, taking us on a journey through his private, social and professional life with photographs and texts.

Córdoba rinde homenaje a "Manolete" en el centenario de su nacimiento

The "Manolete dentro" (Inside Manolete) exhibition takes visitors along open corridors with texts on the walls by artists and writers on the most charismatic bullfighting maestros from Cordoba. They also feature photographs by Ricardo, Santos Yubero, Lara and others from private and institutional collections. They all give us insight into the bullfighter in privacy, with his friends or in his public life. They show us a man who is shy in public, but very different with his friends and acquaintances. A character known for being "serious" who knew how to smile, as the snapshots prove.

A noble character, it is said that Manolete never criticised anybody. This insight into little-known aspects of the bullfighter's life shows us that he a true dandy of his time who set trends.

Tributes to the bullfighter include an enormous sketch of Manolete by Ignacio Zuloaga just a few days before the death of the Basque artist. It has been transferred from his foundation to be exhibited at the municipal bullfighting museum of Cordoba. It is a striking charcoal drawing on canvas, which seems to foretell his tragic death in the bullring at just thirty years old.
