The Customs Surveillance Service intercepts a sailboat full of hashish

In the Alboran sea, a patrol boat from the Customs Surveillance Service boarded a sailboat... with one of the largest stashes of hashish seen in recent years. The drug bundles are being unloaded in the port of Almerimar, in Almería.

The boarding was carried out on the open sea at dawn on Tuesday, under strong easterly winds. First, a helicopter from the Customs Surveillance Service sighted the sailboat. It notified the patrol boat which approached the vessel within a few minutes, allowing customs agents to board.

TVE recorded the unloading of the bundles in the port of Almerimar, in Almería. The sailboat, which was travelling with a fake Greek flag, was so full that it risked capsizing.

The two crew members of the sailboat, both of Dutch nationality, are in the custody of the Civil Guard in Almería, waiting to appear before the National Court. Pending the weighing of the drugs, this appears to be one of the largest hauls of hashish to be intercepted on the open sea in recent years. It is the latest drug trafficking episode on the eastern Mediterranean route, where 130 tons of hashish have been confiscated over the last few years.
