Tenerife chooses its best sportsmen and women

GALA TENERIFE

The 30th Tenerife Sport Gala, broadcast live by channel 2 of Televisión Española Canary Islands, recalled its thirty years of history, with some of the protagonists of this event over the last three decades.

The Tenerife Sport Press Association presented the Sporting Legend Award to the ex-footballer and former trainer Martín Marrero. Mario Pestano received an award for his Career in Sport. The Dedication to Sport Award went to the swimming coach at Ademi, José Luis Guadalupe.

For encouraging values such as generosity and solidarity, the Pedro Rodríguez Ledesma Foundation received the APDT Special Prize. As neither the Chelsea player nor his wife Carolina were attending, the third patron, Aitor Marrero, accepted the award.

Club Baloncesto Canarias was chosen as the best team of 2016. The other two finalists were CV Haris (volleyball) and UD Tacuense (women's football).

The NBA player Sergio Rodríguez was the best male athlete. "El Chacho" won out in the votes over Vicente Hernández (triathlon) and Andrés Mata.

The best female athlete was the Paralympic swimmer Michelle Alonso. The "Tenerife Mermaid" beat Alicia Cebrián (sailing) and Eli Chávez (handball).
